Blog Task 9: Argumentative Essay

Topic 8 : The negative impact of the Internet on society outweighs the positive impact of the Internet on society. Challenge this statement.

The Internet | Written by Shain

Something so ingrained in our daily lives that it would be hard to imagine life without it for the modern man or woman. Yet it should not be forgotten that this was a pretty recent creation and there was life before the internet. Sure, there were not as many conveniences as we are used to now.

We had no social media.

No YouTube.

No email.

It was a time when the world was very decidedly analogue.

And for the most part we coped with it pretty well.

So, this begs the question, do we really need the internet? Do its benefits outweigh the costs that comes with it?

People against the internet often cite it as a breeding ground for most of the things that are wrong with modern society. And they are not wrong. The internet caters to everyone. Unfortunately, everyone includes those reprehensible monsters and criminals that were previously not given a public voice. However, the internet has provided these people with a place to easily find each other and spread their bile and hatred under the protection of anonymity. From white supremacists to pedophiles, terrorists to drug dealers. The internet provides a haven for these cancers on our society. But this is not the extent to what the negative impact of the internet can be seen.

It is the more sinister and subtle things that we are subject to everyday that has all the alarmists riled up and the internet is so convenient that it is slowly changing us into something digital as opposed to something tangible. It would not be a stretch to assume that some young people have more of a life online than in real life. Using their real lives to fund a digital life. This is a terrifying prospect that alludes to a future not unlike those that we read in dystopian science fiction novels of old. A future where people speak to machines instead of each other. A time where we are more akin to robots than men.

The impact that the internet has on society is not limited to its social aspects.

perhaps the worst part of the internet is that it brings out the worst in humanity. We seem to lose all pretenses of civility once we get behind a keyboard. It brings out our most toxic thoughts and ideas as we are given anonymity and a platform for our bad ideas to fester and grow

All these reasons add up to the internet being a very negative influence on our society.

But we should not be so hasty to demonize the internet without looking at the other side of the argument.

It is not the internet that’s bad…it’s the people.

The internet is not on its own malicious.

It is what we shape it to be.

The internet has been a major force for good in the hands of decent people.it provides a breeding ground for innovation as we see brilliant minds from all corners of the world collaborate to better humanity in ways that would have never been possible without the internet to connect them together. And connecting is a big part of what makes the internet great. It opens you up to new ideas. It provides a platform for people from differing backgrounds to find common ground and create bonds. Other than these social benefits The internet also acts as a vast repository of information that is made available for any enterprising person with a smartphone and a stable connection. It gives people some frankly amazing functionality as we are given the ability to find virtually any information we desire. From professional medical advice to tutorials on how to make things. The internet has given everyone the intelligence previously available to the powerful and gifted.

The culmination of all these points would be that the internet in essence gives us a voice. In a world where our real words are often ignored the internet gives us a chance to find those who are like minded and a place for us to connect.

My personal opinion on this topic would be that the internet itself is not something that’s harmful to society. Rather it is the people that are the problem. The bad things that are on the internet ultimately originate from us. The darkness was always within our society. The internet simply provides that darkness an outlet to be let loose. This is opposed by all the good that the internet also gives an outlet to. for everything bad about the internet there are benefits 10 fold from a purely technical perspective the benefits of the internet outweigh the drawbacks. So, in conclusion I would like to state that instead of blaming the internet for all the evil in the world we should take a good hard look at the people around us and try to make a difference in real life.
